5/03/2012 Lecture 2

In our lecture today, Dr Redman illustrated the massive leap media has taken in the last 100 years. From 'old' or 'traditional' media where the primary form of mass communication was through newspapers and television, to web 1.0 where focus was placed on advertising and companies, to web 2.0 or the 'social web' where focus was placed on social groups, to finally web 3.0 or the 'semantic' web, where focus is placed on individuals and the primary aim is to converge information. The modern breakthrough in media delivery has seen the progression of the 'civil journalist' and bought on many positives such as allowing the consumer of news to have news they care about delivered directly to them, but also a few negatives like ethnocentricity and ignorance.
